Popular Disney Ride Sets Permanent Closure Timeline

11 June 2026 at 10:00

One of Disney California Adventure’s most beloved dark rides is officially on borrowed time.

Monsters, Inc. Mike and Sulley to the Rescue!

While the attraction isn’t closing tomorrow, Disney fans now have a clearer picture of when they’ll need to plan a final ride. For guests who love visiting Monstropolis alongside Mike, Sulley, and Boo, the countdown is officially underway as Disneyland Resort continues its massive expansion efforts. Here’s what you need to know about the permanent closure timeline for Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue! and what it means for the future of Disney California Adventure.

Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue! Will Close in 2027

Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue! will be permanently closing in 2027. The good news is that the timeline actually got extended. The ride was originally scheduled to close in early 2026, but Disney pushed the closure back to give guests more time with the attraction before it’s gone for good. Disney has not yet announced a specific closing date within 2027, so there’s no hard deadline to race against just yet, but the clock is definitely ticking.

Mike in Disney California Adventure (he doesn’t move)

The ride has been a fixture at DCA since 2006, and it’s a fan favorite, especially for families with younger kids. It’s the kind of attraction that sneaks up on you as a highlight of the day, so it’s worth making sure it’s on your list if you’re heading to the park before the end of next year.

Why Is the Ride Closing?

The closure is tied directly to the massive DisneylandForward expansion project, which is reshaping Disney California Adventure in a big way. The space where the Monsters, Inc. ride currently sits will eventually become a brand-new Avatar land, which Disney has confirmed will be inspired by the sequel films rather than replicating the existing Pandora at Animal Kingdom.

©Disney

The new Avatar area is expected to include at least one unique ride, described as an adventure boat ride, and is not anticipated to open for several more years (we’re still waiting on an exact timeline from Disney). So even after the Monsters, Inc. ride closes, guests will have a bit of a wait before the replacement land is up and running.

The Disneyland Expansion Is Just Getting Started. Here’s What Might Come Next…

The Extended Timeline Is a Win for Disneyland Guests

Here’s the thing: Disney didn’t just push back this closure randomly. Disneyland’s project management team found a way to sequence construction of the new Avengers Campus attractions, a new Coco boat ride, and the Avatar land without requiring the Monsters, Inc. ride to close on the original schedule or impacting the timeline for those new additions. That’s actually a pretty smart move, because it means fewer closures and more to do for guests visiting DCA during this heavy construction period.

Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue!

The focus on keeping the ride open a little longer also reflects Disney’s ongoing push to offer more for younger guests, since the Monsters, Inc. attraction has always been a strong draw for families with little ones.

What You Should Do Before It Closes

If you’ve got a trip on the horizon, this ride should be on your must-do list. The closure is still a ways out, but 2027 will arrive before you know it. Whether it’s your first time stepping into Monstropolis or your hundredth, this is one worth savoring before it’s gone.

Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue!

Disney is keeping a lot of plates spinning at Disneyland Resort right now, and changes are happening fast. Keep it locked right here to DFB for the latest updates on the Monsters, Inc. closure, the new Avatar land, and everything else going on at DCA.

NEWS: Disneyland Announces ANOTHER Ride Closure for This Summer

9 June 2026 at 09:27

There is nothing worse than finding out your favorite attraction is closed for refurbishment just as you walk up to ride it. We always want you to be aware of any upcoming ride closures. So, if you’re planning a trip to Disneyland this summer, you’ve got to heed this warning!

Sleeping Beauty Castle in Disneyland

Several popular attractions are closing (or have already closed) for refurbishment. We always let you know when a ride is set to close, but it also helps to check the online refurbishment calendar before your trip. However, we’re here to warn you about another new ride closure that has been added to the list!

Click for your FREE Disneyland Snack Map

Disneyland has updated its online calendar to note that a refurbishment starts for the Matterhorn Bobsleds on July 20th. Currently, the Disneyland calendar only goes through July 21st, so it’s not clear when the refurbishment will end. There’s no additional information listed on the website at this time.

Matterhorn Bobsleds

On that same day, there are also refurbishments ongoing for Frontierland Shootin’ Exposition and Pirates of the Caribbean. Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters is currently closed in the park, but will reopen on June 12th. King Arthur Carrousel will also have a short closure this summer.

©Disney

Closures and refurbishments can be added to the Disneyland calendar at any time, though they usually show up at least a few weeks out. It’s a good idea to check the calendar a couple of times leading up to your trip to see if any planned closures could affect you. You’ll need to go to the “Day View” section of the calendar and scroll down until you see “Closed for Refurbishment.” Don’t forget to check both parks, Downtown Disney, and the hotels!

Small World!

Knowing which rides, attractions, or restaurants will be closed can help eliminate that last-minute disappointment when you arrive in the parks. It also might give you the flexibility to reschedule your trip to go at a time when your favorite offering will have reopened. Most of the time, these closures are just for planned maintenance, but occasionally, Disneyland will update rides or change them for the season. Haunted Mansion typically closes in late summer to become Haunted Mansion Holiday, an incredible The Nightmare Before Christmas overlay.

Haunted Mansion Holiday

Then, recently, we saw a brief closure at Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run, where it was updated to include new missions themed to The Mandalorian and Grogu. The ride now has new scenes, missions, and planets available, featuring beloved Star Wars characters from the new movie and hit Disney+ series.

This RARE Haunted Mansion Ride Evacuation Was NOT on My Bingo Card

5 June 2026 at 10:13

Here at Disney Food Blog, we love Disneyland. The park’s iconic attractions can take you through a small world, soar in space, and tour a haunted mansion. But even the Happiest Place on Earth will experience some ride interruptions!

Haunted Mansion in Disneyland

That’s what happened to Disneyland guests riding the Haunted Mansion on Wednesday, May 27th, when they were forced to self-evacuate the ride by themselves! This interruption to the classic dark ride left guests fending for themselves in a twist that has left former Cast Members shaking their heads in disbelief.

According to the Orange County Register, the Haunted Mansion was evacuated on Wednesday, May 27th, after a small electrical malfunction on the track. Cast Members gave verbal instructions and were deployed to assist guests during the evacuation procedure. Guests were safely evacuated from the attraction, and no injuries were reported, according to Disneyland officials. But social media accounts tell a different story!

A video posted to Reddit by u/-sharc- showed Haunted Mansion riders squeezing out of their doom buggies and unlatching the clamshell doors on the ride vehicles to free other passengers during the emergency evacuation. “At first, the cast members advised people to remain seated and to wait to be escorted off the ride,” the user wrote on the Disneyland subreddit. “After about 10 minutes, the message changed, stating that the cast members could no longer assist us.”

“We ask that you hop out of your buggy and find the nearest exit,” a Haunted Mansion cast member said over the intercom system inside the attraction. “If you can, there is a latch on the left-hand side that you can press down to open the clamshell.” The video showed Disneyland visitors squeezing past the lap bars on the closed ride vehicles and walking around the Haunted Mansion cemetery set amid moving animatronic figures and props.

NEW LOOK at Disneyland’s Upcoming Iron Man Ride

2 May 2026 at 13:37

If you’ve ever wanted to go for a ride in an Iron Man suit (and, seriously, who doesn’t?) Disney is currently working on the next best thing.

Want to fly like Iron Man?

Disneyland is getting an unprecedented expansion to Avengers Campus in Disney California Adventure, and that expansion will include two new rides, including Stark Flight Lab, which will simulate what a ride in Iron Man’s suit might be like. Well, thanks to KTLA, we now have a new look at that ride.

A new aerial photo shows that Stark Flight Lab’s exterior is almost complete. The structure is located south of Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission Breakout and next to Radiator Springs Racers. Here’s what construction on the project looks like now:

©KTLA

Inside will be one of Disney’s most ambitious rides to date. Disney combined two ride systems that have never been put together before to create the new ride. It will begin on a chassis that moves up and down a track, which will take riders to Tony Stark’s lab. There, the ride vehicle will separate from that track and then attach to a massive robot arm, which will lift riders up to simulate a flight in the Iron Man suit.

©Disney

There will be a total of 12 robot arms working together, which will bring the experience to life. The arms themselves are similar to the technology used in Universal Studios’ Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey. Thanks to a comment by Robert Downey Jr., who is returning as Tony Stark for the attraction, the ride’s Imagineering team used motion-capture data from dancers so that the robots had more fluid motion.

©Disney

But that’s not the only new attraction coming to Avengers Campus. Another ambitious attraction, Avengers Infinity Defense, will send riders on an adventure through the multiverse to jump between worlds and take on King Thanos, who is causing chaos throughout those worlds.

©Disney

Meanwhile,  Disney is also building a new Coco boat ride behind Incredicoaster, as well as an Avatar-themed land on what was once the Hollywood Backlot area. Construction on that land will permanently close Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue! in 2027.

We’ll keep an eye out for more Disney ride updates, so stay tuned to DFB for more.

REMINDER: An Iconic Disney Ride and Restaurant Are CLOSING Next Week

1 May 2026 at 11:01

If you’re heading to Disneyland next week, we’ve got a word of warning about one of the park’s classic rides.

Pirates of the Caribbean Disneyland

Now, it’s no secret that fans say Pirates of the Caribbean in Disneyland is WAY better than Pirates of the Caribbean in Disney World, and if you were looking forward to riding this classic attraction, we’ve got some bad news: the ride will be closing for a lengthy refurbishment starting on May 4th. Ouch.

That’s right, Pirates of the Caribbean will be closed in New Orleans Square in Disneyland Park on May the 4th (which is also a HUGE day in Disneyland’s Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge). According to the Disneyland calendar, there are no hours for the ride on May 4th through June 11th (as far as the calendar currently goes).

Pirates of the Caribbean

That’s not all, though. This closure also seems to be impacting Blue Bayou, the restaurant you’ll find INSIDE the ride. So it looks like this might be quite a huge refurbishment happening inside Pirates. Blue Bayou’s hours show that it will also close on May 4th, but there is a tentative opening set for May 21st because hours are showing on the website (Disney has not confirmed an opening timeline for the ride).

Blue Bayou

These aren’t the only closures impacting Disneyland, though. In Tomorrowland, Buzz Lightyear’s Astro Blasters has been closed since April 13th, with no tentative reopening date announced yet. In Disney California Adventure, Inside Out Emotional Whirlwind is currently closed, but is expected to open on May 31st. Silly Symphony Swings closed recently on April 27th, with no reopening date announced yet.

Silly Symphony Swings

We’ll keep an eye out for more closures in Disneyland and Disney World, so stay tuned to DFB for more.

I Made the Mistake of Asking My Coworkers for Disneyland Tips

26 April 2026 at 14:19

The DFB team loves ALL Disney Parks, and we’ve had the opportunity to visit Disney’s parks around the world. Of course, our “home” Disney resort is Disney World, which is why we’re talking about it all the time.

Disneyland

However, believe it or not, we’ve got some huge Disneyland fans on our team, too. When one of our own decided to ask for recommendations for what to do in Disneyland, our passionate Disneyland-loving team members went ALL out to talk about their favorite things to see, do, and eat in Disneyland. Now, we’re going to share those tips with you. Warning: we LOVE almost everything about Disneyland, so this list could get long…

The questions posed to our team involved the one ride one must do in Disneyland, the one snack that must be eaten, and the one parade or evening spectacular that is a must-see. One…give us a moment to stop laughing. JUST ONE? IMPOSSIBLE. When you love Disneyland as much as we do, we’re going to have to list out EVERYTHING we love about Walt’s OG park.

Rides

Disney California Adventure

In Disney California Adventure, one of our must-dos is Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission Breakout. Sure, this used to be Tower of Terror, but it feels NOTHING like that now, and is one of those high-energy rides that leaves your adrenaline pumping, while you’re singing along to a great soundtrack. It’s funny how we had so many reservations about when the Tower of Terror closed to make this ride, but now we can’t imagine it any other way.

Mission Breakout!

But wait…someone else on our team prefers Radiator Springs Racers in Cars Land. Now, this is a FUN ride with a lot of fantastic theming and some roller coaster thrills for pretty much folks of all ages, so we get why it’s so popular. Pro tip: rope drop it, and you’ll end up with a shorter line. Otherwise, consider getting in the single rider line.

Radiator Springs Racers

But wait, we’ve got another contender for the one must-do ride in California Adventure. That’s Incredicoaster, which is themed to The Incredibles. It’s a fun roller coaster that’s a lot like Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster in Disney World, but it’s all outdoors, so you actually know when you’re going through the loop. It’s exciting! This one also has a single rider line that you might want to take advantage of.

Incredicoaster

Funny…no one mentioned the Pixar Pal-A-Round swinging gondolas, formerly known as the Mickey Wheel of Death. There’s a reason we choose to stay FAR away from that ride, and if you ever visit Disneyland and hear the screams coming from those gondolas, you’ll know why…

Disneyland

Obviously, Disneyland Park is pretty much the favorite, so we have a lot of opinions about the must-do rides. However, the focus is mostly on rides that are different from those in Disney World, and that includes Pirates of the Caribbean, which is longer, more interesting, and just way better in Disneyland.

Pirates of the Caribbean

Space Mountain also got a few mentions because it’s completely different in Disneyland. The ride vehicles are different (and way more comfortable), the track is different, and more. Now, a warning: when I first visited Disneyland, I did not know Space Mountain was different and rode it and discovered it sort of goes in a corkscrew, which is something that generally does not sit well with people who suffer from motion sickness. Lesson learned.

Disneyland’s Space Mountain

Indiana Jones Adventure is another ride that got a mention because Disney World doesn’t have anything like it…yet. Yes, it’s the same ride track as Dinosaur had, and it will probably be the same ride track that the new Disney World Indiana Jones ride will have, but for now, the Disneyland ride is still unique. Plus, Disney promised the ride in Disney World will have a different story.

Indiana Jones Adventure

Finally, someone else mentioned the Alice in Wonderland ride in Disneyland. Disney World has NOTHING like it, so it’s a must. Don’t worry…the line often looks long, but it moves fairly quickly.

Food

You want some passionate discussion? You ask any DFB team member about food. Obviously, it’s why we’re here! When it comes to Disneyland food, we LOVE a lot of it, starting with churros. Forget any churro you may have had from a Disney World cart…those aren’t good churros. The churros in Disneyland are next level to the point you may be having churros for breakfast every morning of your Disneyland trip (yep, I’m guilty). They also come in a variety of flavors with a variety of dips.

Disney100 Churro

The cookies at Harbour Galley are also popular enough for us to mention them (and truth be told, we LOVE THEM). Then there’s that Cheddar Cheese Stick at Corn Dog Castle (it’s fried cheese on a stick — how can we not love it?). We’re also obsessed with the Cheesy Garlic Pretzel Bread at Edelweiss Snacks. Mickey beignets are also a must, along with corn dogs from Little Red Wagon.

Hnad-dipped corn dog

Basically, we’re obsessed with almost ALL the food in Disneyland. When it comes to food, we think Disneyland may beat out Disney World for tne best snacks.

Entertainment

Well, it seems we just love ALL of Disney’s parades and nighttime shows, starting with the Paint The Night parade, which should stick around at least through the rest of Disneyland’s 70th Anniversary Celebration. After that, we’re hoping that the Magic Happens parade returns (which is the best Disney parade ANYWHERE), but we’re not holding our breaths.

Paint the Night Parade

World of Color — One over in California Adventure also got some mentions, with one of our team members referring to it as “life-changing.” It is a fantastic nighttime spectacular, so if you have time to catch it, you SHOULD.

Although we spend a lot of time in Disney World, we’re also very passionate about Disneyland, but honestly, anything you do there is sure to make you happy. It is, after all, “The Happiest Place on Earth.”‘

We’ll keep sharing our best Disney Parks tips with you, so stay tuned to DFB for more.

CONFIRMED: This Disney Ride Will Permanently CLOSE in 2027

19 April 2026 at 10:00

One of the Disneyland Resort’s most popular dark rides has been battling a permanent closure for years, but 2027 will finally see it close its doors for good.

Say it ain’t so, Mike!

When Walt said that Disneyland would always be changing, he wasn’t kidding. While theme park expansion is very exciting, sometimes it comes with a cost. In the case of the new Avatar land in Disney California Adventure, the fallout is that we’ll be losing Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue! — which is kind of a bummer. Disney revealed this year that the ride will remain open throughout 2026, but we’ll still need to say goodbye for good in 2027.

Despite being originally slated to close in early 2026 (which has already come and gone, if you can believe it), the Monsters, Inc. ride has survived — for now. The permanent closure timeline was extended into 2027 at an unspecified date, so you’ll have plenty of time to see Boo, Mike, and Sulley before they leave the park in favor of James Cameron’s box office-smashing film franchise.

Monsters, Inc. Mike and Sulley to the Rescue!

A ride that generally garners steady wait times, this dark ride takes passengers through an abridged retelling of the first Monsters, Inc. film. Packed with plenty of humor, heart, and air conditioning — this ride has been a favorite of fans of all ages since it replaced Superstar Limo in the early 2000s.

Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue!

A LOT is going on at California Adventure now, as Disney is doubling the size of Avengers Campus with two new rides and a new Coco ride in addition to everything going on in the Hollywood Land Backlot area.

Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue!

Recently, Disney filed a permit with the City of Anaheim regarding the Monsters, Inc. ride demolition, as well as the removal of the Hollywood Lounge beverage stand in the same area.

Hollywood Lounge

The new Avatar land is not expected to open until 2028 or 2029, and as of this writing, no visible progress has been made — at least from the general public’s perspective.

Avatar Land ©Disney

This new Avatar land is unique from Pandora in Disney’s Animal Kingdom, which is based on the first Avatar movie. This California-based land will instead be inspired by the sequel films and will contain at least one unique ride. We still don’t know much about it, but Disney has teased that it will be an adventure boat ride. Crossing our fingers that it’s like the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Shanghai Disneyland!

We’re excited to learn more about this land and its attractions, and we’ll be sure to keep you posted on all the latest info once it rolls in!
