Picking the right hotel for a Disneyland vacation is a deceptively tough task…
Disneyland Hotel
When you’re planning your very first Disneyland vacation, booking a hotel feels like one of the easiest decisions on the list. You see a Disney-owned hotel, you assume it’s the best option, you check out the theming and prices to decide between the hotels, and boom — reservation complete. But a LOT of Disneyland first-timers end up realizing way too late that they booked the wrong hotel for the kind of trip they actually wanted.
Unlike Disney World — where the hotel scene is a HUGE part of the experience — Disneyland’s setup is much more intimate. Featuring only three on-property resorts, the options are seemingly limited, and that can force first-time Disneyland visitors to make a regrettable decision.
Disneyland Hotel
One of the biggest misconceptions about Disneyland’s hotels is assuming that “Disney-owned” automatically means convenient. Yes, all three Disneyland Resort hotels are technically close to the parks. But the way you actually get to the parks is wildly different depending on where you stay.
Let’s start with the gold standard: Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa. This hotel has the biggest advantage on property because it offers a direct entrance into Disney California Adventure. You can practically roll out of bed and end up inside Grizzly Peak within minutes. For guests planning heavy California Adventure days, that convenience is impossible to beat. But be ready to pay premium prices for a room here…
Grand California Hotel
Meanwhile, Pixar Place Hotel USED to have its own dedicated entrance into Disney California Adventure, but that entrance is gone. That means guests now have a longer walk than many first-timers expect. It’s still near the parks and esplanade, but it’s no longer the secret shortcut hotel it used to be.
Pixar Place Hotel
Then there’s the Disneyland Hotel. Back in the day, this hotel had direct monorail access, but now guests have to walk through Downtown Disney to reach the park entrances, and that walk can feel surprisingly long after a full day in the parks. Yes, you CAN hop on the Monorail into Tomorrowland in Disneyland Park, but that only helps if the line isn’t backed up and if Tomorrowland is actually where you want to end up. This isn’t a terrible option, however, since the Monorail station isn’t all too far from the security checkpoint that connects the hotel to Downtown Disney.
Disneyland Monorail
And then we have the Good Neighbor Hotels. These nearby partner hotels vary in proximity. Some visitors assume every off-site hotel is a short walk away, but that’s not always true. Some are walkable, while others require transportation like buses, shuttles, or rideshares. A hotel may look close on a map, but still take significantly longer to reach than expected once crowds, crosswalks, and traffic enter the equation. And even if they are walkable, sometimes walking to your hotel room in a non-Disney bubble at midnight after a long day isn’t the most enticing prospect…
At the same time, the entire resort area is so condensed that some off-site hotels are honestly MORE convenient than certain Disney-owned hotels. There are Good Neighbor Hotels directly across the street from the Harbor entrance that can get you to security faster than guests staying at the Disneyland Hotel on busy mornings.
At Disneyland, proximity is EVERYTHING. It’s a priority for a lot of people to circle when deciding to visit Disneyland versus Disney World. If you care about saving time on your commute, hotel proximity to your preferred destinations is the first piece of homework you’ll want to do.
Parkestry Rooftop Bar at the JW Marriott
Another mistake Disneyland first-timers tend to make is that they assume that staying at a Disney-owned hotel is simply the norm. This ain’t Disney World, folks. Sure, the theming is great, the hotels are beautiful, there are perks, and the amenities rock. But wow, the prices can get intense.
The Grand Californian can easily cost well over $600 through $900 or more PER NIGHT for a standard room, and the Disneyland Hotel and Pixar Place aren’t cheap either, often landing in the same luxury-tier pricing category as Disney World’s deluxe resorts.
Grand Californian Hotel room
For some families, that splurge absolutely feels worth it. But for others? They realize afterward that they barely spent any time in the hotel at all, which really makes you start to wonder if it’s worth it. You can save hundreds or even thousands of dollars by staying at a nearby Good Neighbor Hotel instead.
Yes, you do lose some Disney perks — most notably the complimentary Lightning Lane perk offered to Disneyland Resort hotel guests. But here’s the thing: In many cases, guests can save enough money by staying off-site to purchase Lightning Lane Multi Pass themselves and still have plenty left over for dining, souvenirs, or extra park days. The savings become even bigger if you cash in on hotel rewards points — something you won’t get at a Disney-owned hotel.
Lightning Lane at Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway
That math surprises a LOT of first-time visitors. Staying off-site may not feel quite as immersive, but if your priority is maximizing park time while minimizing hotel costs, it can easily be the smarter financial decision. If you’re only looking for a place to shower and sleep, check out the Good Neighbor spots. If you want your hotel to be just as immersive at the parks, the Disney-owned trio of hotels each offers something special and worthwhile.

Tips for Disneyland in the Summer
Explore at a Relaxed Pace with Multi-Day Vacations
Consider planning a multi-day Disneyland vacation of three days or more, which provides time to explore the resort at a relaxed pace and take breaks in between.
The Hotels of the Disneyland Resort are just steps away from the theme parks, making it convenient to take breaks in the room (or go for a swim at the pool!) when staying on property.
Stay Cool at Disneyland Resort This Summer
If you’re like me and love a good water ride on a summer day, “drop on in” Tiana’s Bayou Adventure at Disneyland or venture through the wild waters of Grizzly River Run in California Adventure.
Both Disneyland and California Adventure offer a number of indoor,air-conditioned attractions. Locate them in the Disneyland app by selecting the “Indoor” filter on the map. Some of my favorites are “Walt Disney – A Magical Life” at Disneyland and Mickey’s PhilharMagic at California Adventure.
Another great location for an indoor break, the Tomorrowland Theater in Disneyland will play Pixar short films for a limited time beginning May 22.
Bring a reusable water bottle and fill up throughout the day at complimentary bottle-filling stations. A map of bottle-filling stations can be viewed on Disneyland.com.
Schedule meals and snack times in the afternoon, when temperatures may be warmer. Many table-service and quick-service restaurants across the resortoffer indoor seating, including Golden Horseshoe at Disneyland, Lamplight Lounge at California Adventure, and Goofy’s Kitchen at the Disneyland Hotel. Advanced reservations are highly recommended for table-service restaurants.
Save Time with Lightning Lane Access
With the purchase of Lighting Lane passes, you can save time waiting in the standby line and instead join a shorter line for select attractions. Visit Disneyland.com for information about the different Lightning Lane passes available for purchase.
Guests checked in and staying at one of the Disneyland Resort hotels can take advantage of one complimentary Lightning Lane entry per registered guest to an available Lightning Lane Multi Pass attraction during their resort stay. More information is available on Disneyland.com.

The magic of a Disneyland Resort vacation lasts long after the trip is over. Souvenirs you’ll cherish for years to come are a special way to commemorate those lifelong memories.
I still have character autographs, park maps, T-shirts, and toys from visits during my childhood, and I’m sure many families and fans can relate.
To provide options for as many guests as possible, Disneyland has a wide selection of souvenirsat a variety of price points. We’re sharing a rundown of some freebies, must-have merchandise, and one-of-a-kind experiences you can choose from to take a piece of the happiness home.
With admission to Disneyland park or Disney California Adventure park, there are free items you can collect to remember your visit. In addition to a full day’s worth of fun, these complimentary keepsakes take your park ticket perks even further.
Celebration Buttons
The iconic celebration buttons add a magical touch to your trip and outfit. Different options are available for birthdays, first visits, “happily ever afters” and celebratory occasions.
These complimentary buttons are offered inside City Hall on Main Street, U.S.A., in Disneyland or at Guest Services in California Adventure.
Also at Disneyland, Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters offers a free photo with your score from the ride. After blasting targets and Zurg’s squad of rampaging robots, you can email the photo to yourself.
Park Maps and Other Paper Goods
Look out for paper goods throughout your day, which make great additions to scrapbooks, journals, or collages.
Available at the main gates of Disneyland or California Adventure, commemorative theme park maps provide a snapshot of what the parks looked like during your visit, sometimes including seasonal designs. You can even grab the family adventure map, which features playful illustrations and helpful information for those traveling with little ones.
Some attractions have unique paper goods that make for great keepsakes, like a themed sticker at Redwood Creek Challenge Trail in California Adventure. If you try your hand at drawing a Disney character at Animation Academy, your sketch also makes a great souvenir.
Even dining locations have mementos you may want to collect, like illustrated paper coasters inspired by favorite Pixar characters at Lamplight Lounge or Star Wars-inspired designs on coasters from Oga’s Cantina.
Character Autographs
After snapping a photo with your favorite Disney pals, you can request an autograph from select characters for a unique keepsake that also catalogs the friends you met on your trip.
You can bring a notebook from home to collect signatures or even get creative by asking characters to sign a photo frame. If you’d like a Disney-themed book, you may purchase autograph books at shops around the resort as a low-cost and easy-to-carry souvenir.
Lower Priced Souvenirs
Budget-friendly finds are available across Disneyland Resort to commemorate your magical day.
Discover tiny treasures with pressed pennies. Prices start at $1 per pressed penny, and you can pick from over 150 different commemorative images to build a collection with.

Custom Embroidery
You can make select products like Mickey Mouse ear hats, sweaters, T-shirts and backpacks even more special with custom embroidery services, creating a one-of-a-kind souvenir or thoughtful gift.
At Plaza Point on Main Street, U.S.A., talented cast members can hand paint festive designs on select items like faux leather Minnie Mouse ear headbands and ornaments.
After buying the item you’d like personalized, keep the tags on and take your receipt to locations with embroidery and personalization services on the same day of purchase to add this extra special piece of Disney magic for an additional cost.
Items to Use in the Parks and Beyond

How much can you really do in a single day at Disneyland park? According to planDisney panelist ~ plenty! Get ready to dive into his action-packed itinerary that shows you how to squeeze every bit of magic out of your visit! Take it away, David!
Whenever friends ask me how much you can actually do in a single Disneyland day, I always smile and say, “More than you think!” The truth is, you’d be hard-pressed to find another place where one admission ticket opens the door to so many adventures: nine-themed lands, dozens of attractions, parades, shows, characters, shopping, and food that ranges from snacks to full feasts. It’s a value measured not just in dollars, but in sheer experiences.
Here’s how I made the most of a recent sunrise-to-closing time day at Disneyland park.
A Few Tips Before the Magic
When I know we’re in for a full day of adventure, I plan ahead with my family. Everyone picks a “must-do” or two. That way, nobody feels left out, and our itinerary feels like a team effort.
The Disneyland app* is our best friend for a long day as it keeps wait times, mobile food orders, and entertainment schedules at our fingertips. And before we even leave home, I check Disney Parks Blog for seasonal surprises, so we can look forward to something new.
Disneyland Rope Drop: The Early Wins
I’m always at the gates at least 30 minutes before opening. The payoff? Those first couple of hours feel like bonus time. I’ve watched the sunlight crest over the Matterhorn, snapped a photo with the Mickey Pumpkin, and still managed to fit in at least three to five attractions before mid-morning.
For today’s adventure, Adventureland is my go-to starting point. Indiana Jones Adventure gives that early-morning jolt of adrenaline, and then I’ll head to New Orleans Square to hit Pirates of the Caribbean before ducking into Haunted Mansion Holiday. With its seasonal mash-up of Halloween and Christmas, the details keep me coming back every year.
And yes, I start snacking early, too. A mobile order of pumpkin cookies from Harbour Galley makes the perfect “walking breakfast” for the whole family.
Late Morning Thrills
Bayou Country is next, where Tiana’s Bayou Adventure immerses us in jazz rhythms, humor, and a splashy finale. By the time we emerge, the day is fully underway.
From there, we jet to another galaxy. Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run is always a crowd-pleaser in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, and if I need a caffeine boost, I grab a Black Caf from Docking Bay 7.
Fantasyland makes a great late-morning reset: classics like Dumbo, Snow White’s Enchanted Wish, and the Mad Tea Party keep the mood light. And seeing Miguel and Dante in “it’s a small world” now is a special touch, especially with Richard Sherman’s new celebratory finale verse.
Lunch and Midday Magic
When hunger strikes, I love Troubadour Tavern’s specialty baked potatoes. They’re filling, shareable, and a great value. My current favorite is the Bulgogi Potato, spicy, savory, and satisfying without slowing me down for the afternoon ahead.
After lunch, I like to catch my breath with a ride on the Disneyland Railroad, followed by a stop inside the Opera House for Walt Disney – A Magical Life. Between the artifacts, models, and the emotional finale with Walt himself, it’s a reminder that the day we’re living out is all part of his dream.
If I have my MagicBand+, I’ll take the 70th anniversary interactive quest scattered across the park. It’s free, playful, and even comes with souvenir printouts at some stops.
Afternoon in Toontown and Tomorrowland
By mid-afternoon, we usually head into Mickey’s Toontown. The kids are able to burn off energy in Goofy’s How-To-Play Yard while I grab a shaded seat. Meeting Mickey or Minnie in their homes before we head out is a guaranteed highlight, and the PhotoPass pictures capture smiles I’ll treasure long after the day ends.
Dinner often means Café Daisy. Available for a limited time as part of the celebration of Disneyland’s 70th Anniversary Celebration, the Chicken Bacon Ranch Flop-Over is indulgent but not too heavy, which means it’s the perfect fuel for the big night ahead.
From there, Tomorrowland pulls us in. Whether it’s racing cars on Autopia, blasting Zurg in Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters, or hopping aboard Star Tours, the variety keeps everyone in the group engaged.
Evening Delights
Around sunset, I squeeze in one more mountain: the Matterhorn Bobsleds. There’s nothing like careening through icy caverns as the sky turns pink behind Sleeping Beauty Castle.
Then, as the lights flicker on across the park, it’s snack time again. I’ve become hooked on the Pineapple Upside Down Sundae at Tropical Hideaway (also available for a limited time), though I’ll never say no to the Spicy Pickle Popcorn near Star Traders.
By now, we’ve logged 10+ hours, and the best is still ahead. Paint the Night Parade, back in Disneyland Park for a limited time, lights up Main Street with its kaleidoscope of floats and music.
As soon as the last float disappears, Halloween Screams fills the sky with projections and on select nights, pyrotechnics and fireworks. Watching Jack Skellington from Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas take over Main Street with my family at my side is one of those moments that makes the whole day worth it.
Wrapping Up a Day Well Spent
By the time the final fireworks fade, we’ve packed in more than a dozen attractions, sampled treats sweet and savory, explored nine lands, and enjoyed parades, and nighttime spectaculars. That’s the magic of a Disneyland day: you don’t just get “a park ticket.” You get an entire sunrise-to-late night adventure filled with memories, surprises, and more fun than you can count.
Walking down Main Street at closing time, with the lights twinkling and my feet tired in the best way, I always think: where else can one day hold so much? Disneyland gives you hours of nonstop magic, and I wouldn’t trade a single minute of it.
Now that is a day full of fun! If you have more questions about planning your next Disney vacation, please visit us at planDisney.com!

Tip: Explore the Magic Beyond the Parks
For the full Disneyland experience, make time for the magic beyond the theme parks. Consider spending a day checking out the dining, shopping, and entertainment at the Downtown Disney District.
If you’re staying at one of the Hotels of the Disneyland Resort, take advantage of the amenities, recreation, and activities for overnight guests. Make a splash at the pool, go on a hotel tour, work out at the fitness center, and more.
The on-property hotels also have must-try restaurants, character encounters and, at select times of year, seasonal entertainment that all can enjoy — including those just visiting for the day. Anyone up for a character dining dinner at Storytellers Cafe in Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa (or Goofy’s Kitchen at Disneyland Hotel!), followed by a few games of shuffleboard at the Pixar Shorts Court and fireworks viewing (on select nights) from Pixar Place Hotel?
One Day at Disneyland Resort
You’re in for a full day of fun and lifelong memories! Just one day at a Disneyland Resort theme park can provide 12 or more hours of entertainment.
Deciding between a 1-Day, 1-Park ticket or Park Hopper ticket depends on the attractions and entertainment you want to prioritize, as well as the pace at which you prefer to navigate the parks.
1-Day tickets also have the most choice and flexibility in what you pay, as prices vary by date.
1-Day Park Hopper Ticket
A Park Hopper ticket presents the opportunity to experience the greatest hits at both Disneyland and California Adventure. The entrances to both parks are right across from each other, so bouncing between them is a breeze! Between both parks, there are more than 50 attractions and experiences to choose from. Start the day training with legendary Super Heroes at Avengers Campus and racing around Cars Land at California Adventure, before heading over to Disneyland for classic attractions and Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.
1-Day, 1-Park Ticket
1-Day, 1-Park tickets are suitable for a day enjoying more of what one park has to offer, from must-do attractions to atmosphere entertainment.
Purchasing Lightning Lane access can be an especially valuable time-saver when you are here for one day and want to prioritize going on rides. Different passes are available for a separate fee to fit more fun in a day: Lightning Lane Single Pass, Lightning Lane Multi Pass, and Lightning Lane Premier Pass. Read more details and how-to instructions on Disneyland.com.
